Western Style Indoor/Outdoor Living From the Mid-Century
One of the driving forces behind the development of residential design by the mid-century modernists was a relaxed and informal plan and the promotion of indoor/outdoor living. Located on a half acre site in the close-in Southwest Hills neighborhood of Portland, this house is a good example of such an architectural program. It provides a wonderful home for entertaining and for family life.
Landscape design is by Michael Schultz and features extensive plantings, 3 koi ponds and water feature elements. Schultz also designed the multi-level custom deck that brings over two thousand square feet of outdoor living space just outside the floor to ceiling glass walls of the house. A built in hot tub is outside the master bedroom and a fire pit is located on the lower level of the deck.
Inside the house revolves around the large custom kitchen. Cabinetry and pantry were designed by Alberto Rivera and features a built-in recycling center and multiple appliance nooks each with its' own electrical supply. Multiple work areas provide space for some serious production. Appliances include a six burner plus griddle Wolf built in range, Gagganau double oven (1 convection and 1 pastry), 2 dishwashers, and a stainless Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer. Clean up will be aided by the KWC restaurant grade faucet hardware with goose-necked pre-rinse nozzle. A large seating area, a gas fireplace and built-in entertainment center make the kitchen a natural hub for household activity.
The living and dining areas feature the original natural finished wood tongue and groove ceiling and walls. These, along with the hardwood floors provide a sense of warmth to the high vaulted space with floor to ceiling glass wall. The main level has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Downstairs there is a family room with fireplace, another large bedroom (or office/studio) and full bath with shower.
